The short version

HEYGOW has no accounts, no sign-up and no forms. It never asks you for your name, your email or anything else about you. What you do on the site - which phrases you favourite, how far you have got - is written to your own browser and is never sent anywhere.

Two third parties do see something: Google Analytics counts visits, and Google AdSense serves the advertising that pays for the site. Both are described below, with the links that let you switch them off.

What HEYGOW stores in your browser

The site uses your browser's local storage - not cookies - to remember your settings and your progress. These values stay on your device. There is no server that can read them, because there is no server: HEYGOW is a set of static files.

• cpt_ui_lang - the display language you chose
• heygow_favs - the phrases you marked as favourites
• heygow_hist - how many times you have played each phrase
• heygow_last - the last phrase you studied, so the resume button works
• heygow_meaning_langs - which translation languages you want shown
• heygow_meaning_pinned - whether you have chosen those languages yourself, so that changing the display language stops overriding them

Clearing site data in your browser deletes all six and returns HEYGOW to its initial state. Nothing is lost that exists anywhere else.

The site also installs a service worker, which caches pages and audio files so that it keeps working on a poor connection. The cache holds only files served from heygow.com and contains nothing about you.

Google Analytics

HEYGOW uses Google Analytics 4 to count page views and see which countries readers come from. It is configured with IP anonymisation on, and with Google Consent Mode v2 set to deny analytics and advertising storage by default for visitors in the EEA, the UK and Switzerland, which means no analytics cookie is set there unless you consent. Visits from localhost and private addresses are excluded, so the operator's own testing is not counted.

Google's own description of how it handles data on sites that use its services is at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites. You can opt out of Google Analytics entirely with the browser add-on at tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout.

Advertising

HEYGOW carries advertising through Google AdSense. When an ad is shown, Google and its partner vendors may set or read cookies on your device - including the DoubleClick cookie - and may use your previous visits to this and other websites to select which ads you see.

• You can opt out of a wider list of vendors at aboutads.info/choices and at youronlinechoices.eu
• Turning personalisation off does not remove the ads; it only stops them being chosen from your browsing history

In the EEA, the UK and Switzerland, advertising and analytics storage is denied by default through Consent Mode, so nothing is stored there unless you allow it. When advertising is switched on, Google's consent message will ask you before anything changes; until you answer it, the defaults above stay in force.

Server logs

The site is hosted on Cloudflare, which keeps standard access logs (IP address, time, page requested, user agent) for security and abuse prevention. The operator does not analyse these logs and cannot use them to identify you.

Children

HEYGOW is a language-learning site suitable for general audiences, but it is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect anything from them. Since it collects nothing from anyone, there is no data to delete; if you believe a child's information has reached the site some other way, please write and it will be dealt with.

Your choices, in one place

• Clear the stored settings: clear site data for heygow.com in your browser
• Stop analytics: install the Google Analytics opt-out add-on, or block the domain in your browser
• Stop personalised ads: adssettings.google.com
• Block everything: any content blocker will stop both Analytics and AdSense, and HEYGOW will still work - the phrases and audio are served from heygow.com itself

Changes

If this policy changes, the date at the top changes with it. Material changes will be noted on the site rather than made quietly.
