HSK 4 - the topics widen to work and society
Level 4 moves beyond daily life into work, society, travel and abstract thinking. It is also the level most often asked for when you study or work in Chinese.
The vocabulary grows, but the sentence patterns are an extension of level 3. It helps to think of it as new words, not a new way of building sentences.
How to work through it by ear
The method is the same at every level. First pass: just listen and check the meaning. Second and third: listen and murmur along. From the fourth: look at the translation and try to say the Chinese before you see it. That alone changes how well it holds compared with reading a list.
On days you cannot sit down, leave it playing while you commute, walk or do chores. One tap repeats a phrase indefinitely, so it needs neither your hands nor your eyes. What is missing is rarely study time - it is total hours of hearing the language said correctly.
Common questions
I cannot hold on to the level 4 vocabulary.
Are you learning it word by word? The words appear inside sentences here, and learning the whole sentence by sound turns out to be both faster and more usable.
Only my listening is weak.
Play the audio without looking at the translation and see whether the meaning arrives. Repeat only the lines where it does not, so your time goes into the gaps.
How should I use this for the exam?
Repeating the lines you failed to catch beats filling in chapters in order. Play counts and progress are recorded per chapter.
