Contrast (although)
29
These are the concessive connectors N2 writing leans on. ものの sets up a fact you'd expect to lead one way, then delivers the opposite: 資格は取ったものの、実際の仕事ではあまり役に立っていない。 or 都会は便利なものの、生活費が高くて大変だ。 Unlike くせに, which reproaches, ものの carries no blame — it simply reports a let-down. Watch the attachment: na-adjectives take な, as in 参加すると言ったものの and 便利なものの.
Addition (besides)

ばかりか stacks a second, usually more striking fact onto the first — 'not only… but even.' It escalates: 彼は約束の時間に遅れたばかりか、謝りもしなかった。 The N2 trap is dropping the follow-up particle that lands the punch — まで or も — as in 彼女は英語ばかりか、フランス語まで流暢に話す and 財産ばかりか信用まで失った。 The second item should outweigh the first, not just echo it.
Condition

次第 does two unrelated jobs here. On a verb stem it means 'the moment X happens,' for future plans only — 詳細が分かり次第、改めてご連絡いたします and 準備が整い次第、出発しましょう — so you never follow it with a past tense. After a noun it means 'depends on': 成功するかどうかは、君の努力次第だ。 N2 learners blur the two; the stem form is fixed business-Japanese for 'as soon as.'
